UNDERSTAND YOUR SITEMAP
Help search engines discover the right pages.
An XML sitemap helps search engines discover URLs on your website. Understanding its structure, contents and limitations can help you maintain a cleaner technical SEO setup.
Sitemap or sitemap index?
An XML URL sitemap lists individual page URLs. A sitemap index lists other sitemap files, allowing large websites to organize their URLs across multiple sitemaps.

Include the right URLs
Your sitemap should generally prioritize canonical, indexable URLs that you want search engines to discover. Avoid unnecessarily including redirected, duplicate or non-canonical URLs.

Important landing pages
Use meaningful lastmod dates
The lastmod field can communicate when a page was last significantly updated. Keep it accurate and reflect genuine changes rather than changing dates automatically without a meaningful update.
<lastmod>2026-10-09</lastmod>
Check the XML structure
Malformed XML, incorrectly nested elements or unexpected document structures can prevent a sitemap from being processed correctly. Validate the document before submitting it to search engines.

Make your sitemap discoverable
You can reference your sitemap in robots.txt and submit it through Google Search Console. These steps help search engines find the sitemap, but do not guarantee indexing.

Discovery is not indexing
A URL appearing in a sitemap does not mean it is indexed or will be indexed. Search engines make indexing decisions based on many signals, including accessibility, canonicalization and content quality.
Sitemap inclusion ≠ guaranteed indexing
This tool checks the sitemap response, XML structure and available URL data. A successful response alone does not confirm that every URL is indexable, accessible to Google or eligible for indexing. Verify important pages separately when investigating technical SEO issues.
